Unless you’re planning to camp at one of the many campsites in the area, Gatlinburg is the place to stay. We prefer staying in Gatlinburg Downtown during our all trips to Smoky Mountains. And honestly think it’s the best town to base yourself for exploring the Smokies.

If it’s your first time in Gatlinburg, I suggest staying in the Downtown area where you can walk to many of the biggest attractions. My top hotel pick is the Gatlinburg Inn, which has a great location and is also a stop on the Tennessee Music Pathways.

Gatlinburg is a year-round destination for lovers of the great outdoors. It offers endless opportunities to hike, ski and breathe in fresh mountain air, and is the ideal vacation destination for those looking to unplug and reset with a breathtaking backdrop. Also, Tennessee’s biggest tourist attraction, Dollywood is just 20 minutes from Downtown Gatlinburg. 

Gatlinburg isn’t huge, but before you start booking and planning your trip, it’s super important to know the vibe of the different areas and figure out where to stay in Gatlinburg. Some areas are busier and buzzing with bars and restaurants, while others are more laid-back and great for families, couples, or even first-time visitors.

Before we get into all the amazing places you can stay in Gatlinburg, let’s get to know the different areas of Gatlinburg town. Choosing the right spot can totally shape your experience, so let me break it down for you.

Downtown Gatlinburg: This is where all the action happens. Shops, restaurants, attractions, everything is here! So, If you love being in the middle of everything, downtown is your best choice. But it can get a little noisy and lively at night, especially when you’re staying right on the main road, which is called “the Strip” or “Parkway.” So, if you’re more into quiet evenings, you might want to check out other areas. You’ll find all the Hotels, motels, condos on this side of the Town.

Chalet Village: Chalet Village can be great for you if you’re after stunning mountain views and peaceful surroundings. It’s located above downtown, so you’re close to main area but far enough to feel like secluded feel.Perfect for enjoying some amazing Smoky Mountain sunsets! You’ll get to rent amazing cabins and chalets at the mountain tops! But make sure to check the roads, sometimes roads will be gravel and steep!

Arts & Crafts Community (Glades Road): Nature lovers, this one’s for you! Glades is close to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park with many art galleries, craft shops, local eateries around. It also offers access to outdoor adventures! If your idea of a perfect trip is being surrounded by nature, with more cultural experience, this is your best area to stay in Gartlinburg.

Pigeon Forge (10–20 min away): If your idea is to visit both Gatlinburg and Dollywood, and away from the crowd of Gatlinburg, with more affordable lodging, shopping and visit other attractions, Pigeon Forge is your best choice. You’ll find affordable Cabins, Hotels and Condos here. It’s suitable for budget-conscious travelers, and families wanting access to both towns.

How to Decide Where to Stay in Gatlinburg

Option 1: Stay in Downtown Gatlinburg

Downtown Gatlinburg is the most Popular place to stay in Gatlinburg. It’s also called the Gatlinburg Strip or Gatlinburg Parkway. I’ve visited Gatlinburg many times, and stayed right in the Downtown Gatlinburg few times and honestly, it’s the best decision if you’re visiting for the first time!

The downtown area might be busy but the town is so charming, it’s definitely where you’ll find all the actions! You’ll have access to tons of restaurants, shops, bars, and so much more here.

We stayed in a hotel on the Parkway, means we had access to food and drinks, and it was amazing how everything was just a short walk away. I recommend that first-time visitors stay in Downtown Gatlinburg because there is so much to explore here. Plus, you can have Downtown to yourself in the mornings before the crowds arrive, and you can use the Gatlinburg Trolley to get to other parts of the town.

Plus, many of the must-see attractions, like the Gatlinburg SkyLift Park, Ober Mountain Amusement Park, and the ski area, are super easy to get to from here. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy the best of Gatlinburg without having to go far!

Pros of Staying in Downtown Gatlinburg

• Restaurants and bars are all within walking distance!
• The OBER Gatlinburg Mountain Tramway and Gatlinburg Sky Lift Park are super close.
• Hiking trails, like the Gatlinburg Trail, are just a short trip away.
• Great Kids activities such as Ripley’s Aquarium.
• You can avoid paying for parking by staying at a hotel on the Parkway. 
• Great for families or first-time visitors.

Cons of Staying in Downtown Gatlinburg

• Hotels in the downtown can be pricier compared to staying outside of town.
• It can get a bit noisy, especially in the evenings.
• Some big hotels in the area might not feel cozy!
• Once you leave Downtown, there’s traffic to get back in.

All in all, if you love all the buzz, Downtown Gatlinburg is an awesome place to stay! It made our trip so much easier and more fun.

• Mid Range: River Edge Inn — Cute little guesthouse right in the city center, near East Parkway.

Option 2: Chalet Village

Next on our stay was the Chalet Village area, a cozy hillside neighborhood near Ober Mountain Amusement Park and just a short drive from downtown Gatlinburg. If you’re looking for peace and quiet while still being close to the action, this is the perfect spot!

The cabins and rentals here are tucked among the trees, giving you the feeling of your own private mountain retreat. I would definitely recommend the area for families and larger groups. There are plenty of fully equipped lodges and mountain houses, perfect for cooking and staying with bigger groups.

Pros of Staying in Chalet Village

• Beautiful mountain views and secluded cabins.The atmosphere is so calm and relaxing. After a full day of exploring, it can be the perfect place to unwind in peace and quiet.
• Quick access to Ober Mountain for adventuring.
• Feels private yet still 5–10 minutes from downtown, perfect for couples.

Cons of Staying in Chalet village

• You’ll need a car since it’s not within walking distance of downtown Gatlinburg.
• Roads can be steep and winding, especially in winter.
• May have limited cell service in some spots.
• You’ll likely have to pay for parking if you go Downtown

Option 4: Glade

Glade is a little neighborhood located little farther from downtown, it’s perfect if you’re looking for a quieter, more laid-back vibe. The farther you get from all the hustle and bustle of downtown, the more peaceful it becomes. It’s basically residential area with adorable holiday homes scattered around surrounded by nature.

Pros of Staying in Glade

• Quiet, less touristy area.
• You’re just minutes away from some of the most beautiful hiking trails and nature spots in the Smokies.
• It’s probably the most budget-friendly area for accommodations in Gatlinburg. More spacious cabins and lodges.

Cons of Staying in Glade

• About a 10–15 minute drive to downtown.
• Limited nightlife and restaurants nearby.
• Some spots might have patchy cell service or WiFi.
• You’ll definitely need a car to get around and fully enjoy everything the area has to offer.

Where to Stay in Glade

• Mid Range: Bearly Gnomey — Great little lone-standing cabin without any neighbors, super peaceful!
• Budget: Brave Eagle Cabin — Right in the middle of the woods, it’s a beautiful secluded cabin.

Option 5 : Pigeon Forge

Pigeon Forge is another small mountain town that’s full of family-friendly fun! This guide is incomplete without mentioning about Pigeon Forge and Dollywood, one of Tennessee’s biggest attractions. It’s a theme park with exciting rides, great food, and high-quality entertainment.

The town is also home to the Titanic Museum, Dolly Parton’s Stampede, the Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster, and much more. There’s plenty to keep all ages entertained during all seasons!

Pigeon Forge is located right next to Gatlinburg, and it’s where we also stayed during Christmas Trip with friends.

• Generally has less traffic than Gatlinburg.
• Often cheaper accommodations than Gatlinburg.

Cons of Staying in Pigeon Forge

• You’ll need to drive more to get around.
• There will be traffic driving to Downtown Gatlinburg.

Tips for Staying in Gatlinburg

• Gatlinburg is a very popular place, being a gateway to Smoky Mountains National Park, it’s visited by millions of people round the year. Expect that there may be traffic delays entering Gatlinburg as well as when you leave to get back onto the Interstate.
• Gatlinburg has a free trolley system that you can use to get around. It’s quick and convenient, and you can even take it to get from Downtown to the Arts & Crafts Community.
• Gatlinburg has so many tourist attractions that it can be easy to forget that the area’s natural features are what originally attracted visitors in the first place. Make sure to visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, take a hike, or try out another outdoor activity while you’re visiting.
• While there is NO shortage of hotel rooms and cabin rentals in and around Gatlinburg, you’ll get the best stay options if you book earlier. This is especially true during summer season, Christmas and winter holidays.
