Best Festive Things to do In London in December for Christmas

Before I share more about Christmas in London, let me just share the fact that its most busiest time of the year in London! Even on weekday, you’ll find crowds on popular streets ! It can be overwhelming for you, so I’ll also include travel tips on navigating the city and also including few quieter spots which are often overlooked by the most people!

Note: The days are very short in December, and it gets dark in London by 4 PM! So, you’ll have plenty of time to admire the Christmas decorations!

1. See the Christmas Lights and Decorations

London is very well known for its Christmas Lights and decor, so definitely one of the best things to do for Christmas in London is seeing all the Christmas lights and decorations that lit up the city during the festive season! And the best part its free!

The most iconic and my favorite places to see the Christmas lights in London are Oxford Street, Regent Street, and Carnaby Street.

Oxford street is city’s beloved shopping street, and you’ll see star displays on the street. In an effort to be more environmentally friendly, the lights at Oxford Street switches on when sun fully goes down, so make sure to keep this in mind.

best street to see Christmas Lights in London

The lights are turned off at 11 PM to save power, so I recommend going around 10 PM to avoid the crowds.

During Christmas in London, mostly you’ll spend much time in Mayfair area, where you see famous Piccadilly Circus, beautiful architecture, famous Fortnum and Mason, and my favorite Regent Street.

Regent Street is famous for its iconic angels sparkling above the street, with red buses in the backdrop! It makes one of the most Christmas worthy photo spots in London.

It is believed that Christmas lights tradition began on Regent Street in 1954! Today, the street is covered with more than 3,00,000 twinkling lights. Truly, Regent Street is London’s most famous Christmas streets, and the display is magical.

While the angels can be seen from Langham Place to Waterloo Place, the best section is between Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus.

Just a few steps from Regent Street, you’ll find another glowing street – Carnaby Street. Unlike most collections of lights, the Carnaby Street decorations center around a theme every year, making for some of the best colorful displays.

On Oxford street, don’t miss visiting Christmas at Selfridges, John Lewis, and Hamleys Toy Store. When I visited, I got to watch the Christmas Carols singing at the Selfridges!

Liberty London, the stunning tudor style building filled with so many impeccable brands, always has a beautiful indoor installation that hangs from the ceiling and you can see it from the differing levels of the store. It’s just off the Regent Street and Carnaby street!

Just keep in mind that the streets get VERY CROWDED during the weekends, especially 2-3 weeks before Christmas! I suggest to admire the festive displays in London on Weekday! If you can brave the cold, visit after 9:30 PM, to enjoy the spots without many people! My favorite has to be South Bank Center Winter Market. Stretched out along the South Bank of the Thames between the London Eye and Waterloo Bridge, is home to some of the tastiest eats and cutest chalets in London.

You’ll get very yummy fries here and don’t miss the Thirsty Farrier Cocktail bar by the river. It’s a gorgeous spot to spend an evening and among my top Christmas things to do in London in December.

Tips for visiting London in December

  • Most of the Lights, decorations, and displays for Christmas in London will kickoff from Mid November to End November. So the best time to be in London to soak into the Christmas festivities is in first week to second week of December. Till this time, all the Christmas decor will be up, and there will be the largest number of Christmas shows and events to experience. For me, it’s ideal time to visit as days leading Christmas will be more crowded and can be tiring!
  • Most of the things remain close during the Christmas time mostly on Christmas day and New Year. London underground has NO SERVICE on Christmas Day, and reduced services on boxing day. So keep that in mind if you’re planning to visit London between Christmas and New Year.
  • December in London will be quite cold and damp. It will likely be cloudy, and rain/fog is certainly possible, so I definitely recommend waterproof shoes/boots and an umbrella. Bring thermals if you’re from tropical countries! Don’t forget to bring a hat, scarf, gloves and some extra layers for colder nights! Dressing in layers is the key to enjoy London in December and not feeling miserable with cold while enjoying the late night Christmas activities!
