You can also drive more, but that will be too hectic! It will be better for you to stay overnight if the driving distance is more than 2 hours, which will give you more time in exploring.

Muir Woods is home to California’s most iconic giant Coastal Redwood trees that average 600 to 800 years old and can reach over 250 feet in height. The trails are well marked out and easy to navigate, making it suitable to for all ages and difficulty levels.

The best thing to do in Muir Woods is to go on a hike. You can hike along the Redwood Creek Trail, which is the main trail in Muir Woods. This trail is 2 miles long and takes 1.5- 2 hours to complete. It will bring you close to the most impressive redwoods, with crossing of bridges and hiking on flat grounds, makes it also suitable for those with accessibility needs.

I highly recommend visiting the Cathedral Grove, one of the most impressive parts of Muir Woods. If you’re looking for something more challenging, consider trying the Canopy view to Lost Creek to Fern Creek trail loop. There are many more trails that you can check out on this map.

Travel Tip : The best time to visit Muir Woods is from May to October because November to April might have more rainy days. If you’re visiting in summer or fall, consider arriving in the early morning or coming during a weekday to avoid crowds!

Getting to Muir Woods: The easiest way to get to Muir Woods is by car, but parking is extremely limited. You need to make parking reservations in advance via GoMuirWoods.com, at $9.50 per vehicle. Also, you need to pay the entrance fee $15 per person, but can be covered by America The Beautiful Pass!

Alternatively, you can visit by shuttle bus from Sausalito (also needs an advance reservation), or by joining a guided tour from San Francisco. You can book shuttle buses here.

Best Guided Tour You can Book: You mostly need 1-2 hours to explore the Muir Woods, and adding to getting here, 3-4 hours are enough to visit from San Francisco. It has some of the best waterfalls, open grasslands, Canyons, and hiking trails because of its unique landscape. I am sure this will keep you busy for the whole day!

Also the Park is surrounded by the beaches and Muir Woods, which you can explore together if you want. The drive up to the peak is also very scenic, and offers the stunning views of Ocean and Skylines of San Francisco.

Hiking lovers can go for the loop trail from Stinson Beach up towards Pantoll Station and back to experience amazing views and terrain. Located just 1.5 hours north from San Francisco, Napa and Sonoma Wine Country is the most popular day trip destination not only because of its easy access from Bay Area, but also because of its famous wineries, vineyard tours, tastings, and luxurious dining!

If you love wine, then you can’t go wrong with a day trip to Napa and Sonoma Valley. Even if you don’t drink, just visit for the countryside vibes, and enjoying fine dining by the gorgeous settings!

It’s worth to note that Napa is a bit more upscale, with larger wineries and iconic estates, while Sonoma has a more relaxed, small-town feel with more boutique vineyards.

Half Moon Bay is about 45 minutes drive from San Francisco. You’ll be driving Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) for most of the way so it’s a very scenic journey.

Half Moon Bay’s historic Main Street offers so many things to see and do, ranging from the town’s historic jail, historic houses, art galleries, to enjoying a meal at local eateries.

There are also seasonal things to do including the Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival during October and the Night of Lights at the start of winter. One of the most popular activities is seal watching and tide pooling at J V Fitzgerald Marine Reserve.

The best time to visit Half Moon Bay is in spring as you get the gorgeous wildflower blooms, and in fall for the pleasant weather and fun pumpkin-farm experiences. Summer tends to bring a late morning fog, but its also a nice escape from the heat.

8. Santa Cruz

Distance from San Francisco: 73 Miles

Just over 1.5 hour’s drive away from San Francisco and you’ll find yourself in the land of beautiful beaches, world famous surfing culture, and lots of outdoor hiking options.

There are a few ways to travel from San Francisco to Santa Cruz, the most scenic being the Highway 1 route that offers the best ocean views.

Spend the morning exploring the city, exploring beautiful cafes, and then head to the beach and brave the waves or relax on the beach.

In the afternoon, explore the Capitola’s seaside charm, visit Natural Bridges State Beach, enjoy the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. If you are seeking outdoor adventures, head over to Mountains behind the city, and go on a hike in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park or ride the the Roaring Camp steam train through redwoods.

Travel Tip: During Winter and fall months don’t miss watching migratory Monarch butterflies at Natural Bridges State Beach.
