When Is the Best Time to See Fall in Georgia
When will the leaves change color in Georgia? The color change in South happens much later than North East Coast. If you visit in early October, you’re not likely to see many vibrant trees.
The Peak fall foliage in Georgia happens usually from last week of October to early November. The colors start to transform in the higher elevations first and work their way down.
You might not even see the best colors until mid- to late November, especially further south.
So, to maximize your itinerary, start with North Georgia in late October and end in the Atlanta area as you enter November if you’re thinking of doing a fall road trip in Georgia.

Tallulah Gorge State Park
If you want to experience one of the most beautiful canyon views, waterfalls, river and scenic overlooks, Tallulah Gorge is the perfect place to see the Fall in Georgia!
It also offers really unique experience of being able to walk across a suspension bridge that is 80 feet above the rocky river bottom! It’s fun things to do in fall for sure. The gorge, with its dramatic cliffs and cascading waterfalls, becomes more colorful with warm fall foliage! It’s pretty sight to behold!

You can choose from easy or difficult trails. Hike along the rim to several overlooks with waterfall views, or get a permit from the park office to trek all the way to the bottom. As you hike the trails along the rim, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views that look straight out of a postcard.

Cloudland Canyon State Park

The Park consists of 3,538 acres of land and features waterfalls, caves, sandstone cliffs, canyons, creeks, and lots of wildlife. It is a beautiful park to visit year-round, but really looks colorful during Fall in Georgia.

The canyon views are stunning, showcasing the beauty of fall colors in Georgia on full display. It offers easy to rich overlooks and some easy to moderate hiking trails. The best hiking trails to enjoy during fall are the overlook trail (1-mile RT), waterfall trail (2-miles RT), and the west rim trail (5-miles RT). The west rim trail offers the great view of canyon with bursting hues of red, orange, and yellow colors.
Helen, Georgia
Another must visit destination to see fall Georgia is charming town of Helen. This unique town is a recreation of a Bavarian Alpine village, with classic German architecture, cobblestoned streets, flowing river and a windmill. You’ll feel like stepping back into the time!
Helen is located in the heart of Blue Ridge mountains along the Chattahoochee river. You can just walk around the cobblestone streets in the town to see fall leaves, enjoy river tubing, hiking or camping to see the fall foliage. This is really one of the great place to experience small town vibes with outdoor fall foliage.

Anna Ruby Falls
North Georgia is known for its waterfall wonders, and Anna Ruby Falls is one of the most visited waterfalls of Georgia, located near Helen.
There are twin waterfalls, surrounded by a burst of fall colors in fall. The hike is easy 0.9-miles RT that passes through forest and river stream. It’s really beautiful landscape during fall season in Georgia.
Drive The Russel Scenic Byway
If you want to go on scenic fall foliage drive in Georgia, check out 40.6-miles long Russel Scenic Byway, surrounded by Chattahoochee National forest. It is a fabulous scenic route that shows the true beauty of the southern Appalachian Mountains when colors of leaves are changing.
You’ll catch sight of some of the most beautiful views that’ll make you pull over just to soak it in. It’s easy drive from Atlanta, and perfect escape to soak into the beauty of fall foliage in Georgia!
Brasstown Bald
Located near Blairsville, Brass Town Bald is Georgia’s Highest Peak and it offers some of the most incredible and unobstructed views of the fall foliage.
Situated 4,784 feet above sea level, you will feel like at the top of the mountain peak, with 360 degree views of best fall foliage colors! The expansive views stretch as far as the eye can see, showcasing the colors blanketing the North Georgia mountains!


To reach the observation deck, you can hike 0.09-miles round trip or take the free shuttle. But hike is steep and short, so be prepared! It is a straight uphill climb that can make you breathing hard and taking a few breaks.Once at the top, you can see the panoramic fall views and on very clear days, it is possible to see 4 different states!
If you could only pick one place to see fall in Georgia, I will say it should be this!
Fort Mountain State Park
One of the most unique places to visit during Fall in Georgia is Fort Mountain State Park. When you hike around the Park, you’ll come across an interesting 800 ft long ancient stone wall from around 500 to 1500 AD of which its origin is still unknown today. This makes it one of the quirky fall foliage place to visit in Georgia.
Additionally, Fort Mountain has a historic fire look-out tower that was built in the 1930s. You can reach via hiking the red trail. The trail is rated as moderate and is 1.5 miles round trip, taking you to this scenic overlook, providing you with 180-degree views of the mountains. From the top, you’ll see valleys with breathtaking colorful leaves during fall in Georgia.

It’s also a hotspot for mountain biking and horseback riding. But also keep an eye out for bears in the fall, as Fort Mountain is known for its large black bear population!
While you’re here, drive the scenic HWY 52 in Chatsworth for beautiful mountain scenery and overlooks to see pretty fall foliage of Georgia.
Vogel State Park
Vogel State Park is one of the best places to see fall colors in Georgia without any hiking. It’s located at the base of Blood Mountain, consists acres of land and one large lake. Vogel State Park has several campsites, cottages, and Picnic areas.
You can park in front of the visitor’s center, and you’ll be surrounded by colors. For the best view, keep walking to the opposite side of the lake to see the Lake with the fall foliage mountains.


Even there is a waterfall trail on site. The hike to Trahlyta Falls is just 1-miles and its very easy flat trail from visitor center. You can also enjoy the other activities include hiking, fishing, paddle boarding, kayaking, and biking.
Yonah Mountain
Yonah Mountain is situated between Helen and Cleveland and it is the site of a Native American legend. it offers one of the best summit hiking views in North Georgia.

Climbing Yonah Mountain is is considered a most difficult hike of the Georgia due to the rugged terrain and steep drop-offs. You’ll gain lots of elevation during 2-miles climb, but the the panoramic views of Blue Ridge Mountains at the top really makes it worth the efforts! You’ll get the stunning displays of red, orange, and yellows.
Blue Ridge Scenic Railway
One of the must do activity during Fall in Georgia is riding the Blue Ride Scenic Railway. Don’t get confused it with Blue Ridge Parkway of North Carolina! Blue Ridge is one of the most charming small town of Georgia.
The train passes through the mountains on a 26 miles RT journey through blue ridge mountains along the the Toccoa River, offering glimpses of vibrant and colorful fall displays from the window of your seat! It’s one of the most leisure way to see fall foliage in Georgia without any hiking or driving!


You can take a 2-hour or 4-hour train ride. The two-hour trip gives you more time in Blue Ridge town, and the four-hour ride allows you to explore McCaysville, GA and Copperhill,TN, nestled deep in the mountains on each state’s line during during a one hour layover. You can grab lunch here, pop into the stores and breweries.
The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway runs from September 21st to November 6th. The entire ride is beautiful, and there is also an open cabin to get the best pictures. Tickets sell fast during fall season, so make sure to book it in advance. Check the rates and timings here.
Amicalola Falls
One of the must see destination of Georgia, Amicalola Falls is year-round destination, but its more beautiful during fall foliage. Located just an hour from Atlanta, you’ll find the Southeast’s tallest cascading waterfall at Amicalola Falls State Park.

Seeing the water cascading down the rocks with the backdrop of vibrant fall foliage is the ultimate leaf peeping dream come true! The falls can be enjoyed from both easy and difficult trails.
If you don’t want to hike, a short, flat path leads to a boardwalk offering the most spectacular views. There’s also an easy-to-reach overlook at the top. For a challenge, start from the bottom of the falls and hike up the steep 100+ steps on staircase. This is one of the most thrilling experience during fall in Georgia.
Black Rock Mountain State Park, Clayton
At an altitude of 3,640 feet, Black Rock Mountain is Georgia’s highest state Park, offers Panoramic views of the mountains that looks straight out of postcards. You can visit this place year round for beautiful mountain scenery, but fall time is definitely something you’ll remember forever!

You can enjoy the views just from the many roadside overlooks and the summit Visitor Center that offers sweeping views of colorful Blue Ridge Mountains. Even there are many easy to moderate trails to keep you busy during the day.
Choose the 2.2-mile Tennessee Rock Trail for a short hike or opt for difficult 7.2-mile James E. Edmonds Backcountry Trail for full day of adventure.
Red Top Mountain State Park
Red Top Mountain State Park is a great leaf-peeping location, which is very close to Atlanta. Located on the banks for Lake Allatoona, this state park makes perfect picturesque fall foliage destination. The scenery is similar as the Lake Price in Blue Ridge Parkway!

And best things is the Park comprises 15-miles of hiking trails. But the most popular is Iron Hill Loop trail for the perfect fall hike featuring golden, red and orange leaves against clear blue lake waters! It’s perfect hike to see fall in Georgia as a day trip.
Atlanta
When we talk about fall in Georgia, can’t miss the Capital city Atlanta. And you may be starting your trip here if you’re flying into the Atlanta airport. The city itself offers so many fun fall activities and many locations to visit that offers beautiful fall foliage views.
You can explore highlights of Atlanta in one day! Among all places I love Piedmont Park in fall. The park is huge with so many trails, playing areas and offers the best views of fall with the backdrop of Atlanta skylines.

Grant Park is another great spot for seeing Fall in Georgia. It consists of 130 acres and is Atlanta’s oldest city Park. My another favorite spot is Roswell Mill historic area. You can walk across the wooden bridge, hike the trails on Vickery creek, and visit a waterfall and beautiful river. You can also grab delicious croissants and coffee from nearby Land of A Thousand Hills Coffee.

Visit Savannah
If you relate fall and Spookiest things – then you must visit SAVANNAH, one of the most haunted cities in America! Savannah is known for its Southern charm and paranormal activity. And nothing is better than spotting ghosts in Georgia’s spookiest city in October!
Savannah is known for its architecture, historic graveyards, and buildings with ghost sightings. Top haunted sites include Bonaventure Cemetery, the cotton exchange building, the Benjamin Wilson House, and Wright Square etc.

One of the best fall activities in Savannah is to take a guided ghost tour. They are super popular and for good reason! Join a pub crawl ghost tour, a traditional walking tour, Ghosts and Gravestones Trolley Tour, or like the popular Genteel and Bard’s Dark History & Ghosts Tour.
The fall weather is also a great time for exploring the city. Take a bike ride or a walking tour around Savannah’s historic squares while enjoying the crisp air.
Also, fall is very famous festival season in Savannah. You can enjoy Halloween activities, Jazz music festivals, Pride festivals, SCAD film festival, and Oktoberfest at the plant river district. Fall is perfect time to go for Apple Plucking! Though Georgia is known as ‘Peach State’, there are few apple orchards in North Georgia mountains that will give you a chance to pluck delicious apples for perfect fall foliage experience!
The city of Ellijay is the best spot for apple picking in Georgia, its known as Apple Capital of GA! Just drive along Highway 52 to find best orchards of Georgia!
Before going for apple picking, just check the websites of individual orchards to see what will be available when you’re visiting! Also, check which orchard’s are offering “U Pick” area, because not all are open for it!
The most popular apple orchards in North Georgia are Mercier Orchards, R & A Orchards, and B.J. Reece Orchards.
After filling your basket, don’t forget to visit the stores on site. They sells delicious apple goodies like apple cider donuts to apple butter, the Orchards are a fall flavor paradise that will make your taste buds do a happy dance. I really love apple cider donuts!
Visit a Winery
Visiting a Winery is one of the coolest way to experience fall season with crisp mountain air, sipping wine with great views of fall foliage. If you’re looking for a cozy spot with beautiful mountain views and fall foliage, visit one of the many wineries in North Georgia.
Most of wineries are just short drive away from Atlanta. So you can explore the city, go for morning fall hike, then apple plucking and end your day with winery tour, all within one day trip! That’s the beauty of fall in Georgia, you’re near to most of the fall attractions!

Most of the wineries are located around Dahlonega, the town known for its gold rush history! You can check out the Kaya Vineyward and Winery, Three Sisters Vineyward, Chateau Meichtry family vineyard, and fainting goat vineyards.
You can join guided tour around the mountain vineyards to sample locally-produced and award-winning wines.
Visit a Pumpkin Patch

It’s located near Athens, GA and very popular during fall, so make sure to book your tickets in advance.
Another most popular Pumpkin Patch is Burt’s Pumpkin Farm. It’s more laidback and perfect for capturing adorable photos! You can enjoy fun hay ride with lovely views of flowers, pumpkins and so much more.

Find Your way out of a Corn Maze
