About the Kancamagus Highway, New Hampshire

The Kancamagus Highway (pronounced Kanc-ah-mah-gus), also known as “the Kanc” for short, is a 34.5 mile stretch of Route 112 that connects the towns of Lincoln and Conway in New Hampshire’s White Mountains; with NO Gas Stations or drive-through coffee stands on this stretch of highway – just you, the road, and a kaleidoscope colors of fall foliage!

If you were to do the drive without making any stops, the trip takes about 50 minutes one way. There’s no doubt about it – It’s the most scenic drive for fall in New Hampshire, if not the world!

Brief History of Kancamagus Highway

You won’t find anyone living along the Kancamagus Highway today, but this postcard perfect highway was once home to the Pennacooks, an Algonquin-speaking indigenous people. The road is named after Chief Kancamagus, who was the last chief of the Pennacooks (known as the Fearless One).

The highway originally started as two separate, unconnected roads, one from Lincoln and one from Conway, but starting in the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) worked to extended the road westward from Passaconaway Village and they worked to connect them, which took 25 years.

Today the road is driven by millions of people every year and it features many overlooks, trails, and sights to check out as you drive up to a high point of 2,855 feet.

If you’re planning a trip to New England fall road trip, just grab a pumpkin spice latte, sit relaxed and let me take you through the ultimate guide to the Kancamagus Highway Fall Foliage drive.

Where to start the Kancamagus Highway Drive

You can start driving the Kancamagus Highway in either Lincoln or Conway, New Hampshire. Both of these towns are surrounded by the White Mountains and equally beautiful in fall season.

You can drive the highway in either direction from East or west! If start in Lincoln, you’ll reach the mountainous overlooks early on the drive, while starting in Conway will bring you to waterfalls and roadside stops first. The direction you complete the drive will likely depend on where you’re staying or coming from beforehand!

PRO TIP: If you love roadtrips and capturing the videos, I suggest driving from East side in Conway to West side Lincoln(NH). This way you can avoid the direct sun rays while capturing the road views! It avoids harsh light for photography! Though this doesn’t matter when you stop at roadside viewpoints!

Best time to Drive Kancamagus Highway

See you can visit Kancamagus Highway throughout the Year! But It is one of the most famous fall color destination of New England and October is most popular time to visit! If you want to see the Peak fall colors, means you need to time your trip right and hope for a little bit of luck. And timing your visit to catch the Peak Fall Foliage is bit tricky always! You can see past trends but still it won’t guarantee you’ll get the best show!

Generally, the leaves along the Kancamagus Highway start to change color around mid-September, with peak foliage typically occurring in the first two weeks of October. By the third or fourth week of October, the leaves begin their transformation from brilliant reds and oranges to a more subdued brown, signaling the end of the foliage season.

I visited New Hampshire during First week of October 2023 and it was Peak time for that year. Also, the colors depends on weather throughout the year! During my visit, it was an “El Niño” year (flooding year), which lead to more muted colors than normal. So you can imagine how gorgeous it can be during brightly colored year!

That said fall colors can varies from year to year, but the first two weeks of October tend to have the best colors. To ensure you catch the leaves at their peak, plan to spend a few days in New Hampshire. This way, you can take advantage of the best weather conditions. Here are a few resources to help you stay updated on current fall foliage conditions:

You can use above Fall Foliage Forecast as a base to determine when Peak or near Peak foliage will be. But if storm or rain is in the card, it can wipe out the leaves!

How long It Takes to drive the Kancamagus Highway?

The drive along the Kancamagus Highway is 34.5 miles, and takes under an hour without stops, but to get the full experience you’ll want to have at least half a day to visit most of these stops including short hikes to waterfalls.

If you want to do any longer hikes along the road, I suggest to dedicate one whole day to drive along the highway! And if you’re roadtripping in White Mountains, you may drive the Kanc highway multiple times! So, you can alway visit the places you missed the first time!

Things to Know Before You Drive the Kancamagus Highway in Fall

Here are some practical tips to ensure you have a smooth and memorable trip along the Kancamagus Highway during fall.

Start Early

I can’t stress this enough! To make the most of your day and avoid the crowds, start your journey EARLY! We started our drive right after sunrise and made it to the entrance early in the morning! We hardly saw many people around us! Plus the golden morning light also provides the perfect backdrop for photos. As the morning went on, places became busier and busier and the parking lots started to fill up by Noon! Also, later on Noon traffic was insane on the highway!!

Go On Weekday

My 2nd important tip is to visit Kancamagus Highway on Weekday, especially during the fall when more people are at work or school during the week. Most of the time, peak fall foliage happens during first tow weeks of October (overlaps Colombus Day weekend), and it becomes more crowded during this holiday time!

Parking & Fees

Driving the Kancamagus Highway is free, but some overlooks and trailheads have a day use fee. Double-check signage before wandering off! You can purchase a daily parking pass for $5 from one of the self-serve pay stations in any parking area that requires the pass, such as Lower Falls.

But if you have America the Beautiful Pass, which is $80 per year, you don’t need to pay for parking. Make sure your pass is prominently displayed on your dashboard or rearview mirror. Don’t forget to bring it along if you have one (HIGHLY recommend it)!

Download Offline Maps

There is almost NO Cell Service along the Kancamagus Highway, so make sure to download offline maps and ALL Trails Maps to navigate the road and any trails before you start your roadtrip. This will ensure you can navigate without getting lost. I also recommend printing this Kancamagus Highway map online or you can get the printed map from the visitor center at the start of the highway.

Fill the Gas Ahead of Time

The beauty of the Kancamagus Highway is that there is NO Services along the whole 34.5 miles highway stretch! So, make sure to fuel up before you leave Conway or Lincoln, NH!

Pack Snacks

Since there are NO commercial services along the highway, pack enough snacks and water for your adventure. This will keep you energetic without any interruption during peak fall foliage drive.

Dining Reservations

With limited dining options in the area, especially during peak season, If you want to have a nice dinner out, make the dining reservation ahead of time! We had to wait for almost 40 minutes one day to get the Pizza for the dinner! So don’t make this mistake as I did!

Which Stops to Make along Kancamagus Highway

There are so many beautiful places to see along the Kancamagus Highway. Below I’m sharing the best stops to make during your fall foliage drive that includes hikes, vistas, waterfalls, and historic sites! Each stop has its own large parking area and is accessed right off the main highway.

This list focuses more on shorter hikes and roadside attractions that are easier to check out if you plan to drive the entire road in one day.

➜ As I mentioned earlier, you can drive in either direction, but this list is in order starting in Conway, ending in Lincoln, the direction we drove (east to west). So the roadside river stops will be in beginning and as you drive, and stops with mountain viewpoints will be near the end of highway near Lincoln, NH. And this is the best way to avoid the crowds at waterfalls and river side attractions!

Other Great Attractions around Kancamagus Highway

While the Kancamagus Highway is undoubtedly a highlight of any trip to New Hampshire in the fall, there are also plenty of other great attractions and activities in the surrounding areas. Here are some of my favorites places to visit at the end of the highway!

Swift River Covered Bridge & Saco River Covered Bridge

Before starting of your Kancamagus Fall Foliage drive in Conway(New Hampshire), make a quick stop at the Swift River Covered Bridge and Saco River Covered Bridge!

The covered bridges were built in the 19th century with the purpose of providing an easy way for locals to get from one side of town to the other. They have been restored multiple times over the years but picturesque till today!

Flume Gorge

Flume Gorge is located near Franconia Notch State Park and is a must-see attraction in the fall. It’s a beautiful 2-mile loop trail that takes you through the gorge, past waterfalls, and over bridges.

beautiful flume gorge during fall

The walk is quite easy, however, there are some uphill sections and lots of stairs so I would recommend wearing proper hiking shoes. During the peak foliage season, I highly recommend to buy your tickets online few days in advance! I really loved the gorgeous colors and views here, worth the money!

Artist’s Bluff Lookout

This is one of the most popular hike in New Hampshire, thanks to Social Media! This trail is located in Franconia Notch State Park and offers incredible views of the white mountains and Echo Lake.

Artist's bluff lookout

The entire hike is only about 0.5 miles and easy, but some sections are rocky so wear proper shoes! It takes only 20 minutes to reach the viewpoint (Park near the lake)! But the views from the top are simply breathtaking and it’s suitable for everyone!

NOTE: The trail gets extremely busy on weekends and during the day! Arrive early at sunrise to experience peaceful hike with unobstructed views.

Echo Lake & Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway

Echo Lake is located right next to the Artist’s Bluff Lookout, and offers stunning reflections of white mountains! It has a swimming area, picnic spots, and many trails.

While this place is very popular during the summer months for swimming, it truly becomes so colorful during fall foliage season.

While you’re here, you can get the top views of the fall foliage from the top with riding Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway. The tram ride to the 4,080-foot summit offers panoramic views of the foliage below.

The ride to summit takes 10 minutes and operates daily from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with the last tram up at 4:30 PM in the months from May to mid October.

Bartlett Covered Bridge

Another covered bridge of NH but it’s my favorite Covered Bridge and must stop when doing New England fall road trip. As the name suggests, this bridge is located in Bartlett and is one of the beautiful red bridges surrounding the fall colors. But what makes it unique?? It’s home to a gift shop now!

This bridge was built in the 1930s and was rebuilt and renovated quite a few times over the years, but is now waiting to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. So, don’t miss this place when driving Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire.

Jackson NH Pumpkin People

Last but not least is the beautiful town of Jackson, New Hampshire. Every year in the fall, Jackson is home to the Pumpkin People – charming, life-sized pumpkin figures that pop up every autumn. It’s created by local businesses, residents, and inns, with creative, humorous scenes — fishing, hiking, dancing, and more!

The town puts on an event where you can go on a self-guided tour throughout the town to look for pumpkin heads. They are mostly located outside of local businesses, front yards, and shops around Jackson Village.
